Π εριβαλλοντική διαχείριση εργοταξίου. Έλεγχος σκόνης, θορύβου και κραδασμών
In modern demolition and construction projects, success is not only measured by the completion of the project, but also by how we manage its environmental impacts. Environmental site management is now essential, as it ensures not only compliance with legislation, but also the health of employees, the quality of life of residents and the overall reputation of the company.
Let's take a closer look at how we control three key factors that affect the environment of a construction site: dust, noise and vibration.
Dust. An invisible enemy
Dust is perhaps the most visible, yet insidious, pollutant on a construction site. It comes from demolition, excavation, waste transportation, and heavy vehicle traffic. In addition to being an aesthetic nuisance, it can cause respiratory problems for workers and residents, and it also affects the vegetation around the construction site.
How do we control it?
- Wetting. The most common and effective way. Spraying water on work areas, on material surfaces and on construction site roads.
- Dams & covers. Placing protective barriers or nets around the construction site, as well as covering trucks and stored materials.
- Systematic cleaning. Regular cleaning of construction site roads and vehicles before leaving.
- Special equipment. Use of machines with dust extraction systems or integrated water spraying.
Noise reduction on projects
Noise from machinery, blasting and construction can be a source of serious annoyance to residents and cause hearing problems to workers. Noise reduction is critical to maintaining good community relations and protecting health.
How do we limit it?
- Low noise equipment. Selection of modern machines that meet strict noise standards.
- Soundproofing & coverings. Placing temporary sound barriers around noise sources or using soundproof covers for machines.
- Proper planning. Performing the noisiest tasks at specific times, away from periods of common quiet.
- Machinery maintenanceRegular maintenance of equipment to avoid increased noise due to wear and tear.
- Personal protection. Provision of earplugs and other personal protective equipment to employees.
Vibration management
Vibrations, mainly caused by heavy machinery, hammering or blasting, can affect the structural adequacy of neighboring buildings and cause discomfort or even fear to residents. Vibration management requires attention and specialized methods.
How do we control them?
- Choosing the right technique.Instead of classic blasting, where possible, techniques such as mechanical demolition or concrete chipping are used.
- Careful blasting designIf blasting is necessary, a detailed study is carried out to optimize the explosives and the firing method to minimize vibrations.
- Continuous monitoring. Installation of vibrometers in nearby buildings for continuous monitoring and recording of vibration levels.
- IsolationIn some cases, trenches or special dams can be used to absorb and isolate vibrations.
The holistic approach and legislation
Effective environmental managementof a construction site requires a comprehensive plan. This includes an initial environmental impact assessment, the setting of specific objectives, the implementation of control measures, and ongoing monitoring. All these actions must be in accordance with Greek and European legislation, which sets strict limits for dust, noise and vibration.
Why is it worth it?
Investing in environmental site managementoffers multiple benefits:
- Legal compliance. Avoiding fines and legal problems.
- Reputation improvement. Strengthening the company's image as responsible and environmentally sensitive.
- Good relations with the community. Reducing complaints and creating a positive climate.
- Employee safety. Protection of personnel health.
- Project efficiencyProper management can lead to fewer delays and unforeseen expenses.
